Paris dispatch, riot edition

Paris (March 30, 2006) -- I'll keep this brief.
The French riots are being blown way out of proportion by the American media because there are not more important things for them to write or report on, like a war or a massive deficit or the under-funding of [insert here an important American section of federal budget besides defense].
The riots are the work of youngsters who are angry that they won't be able to stay in the same job for the rest of their lives.
I find it ironic that there would be riots in America if young people were told that they were to be hand-cuffed to the first job they landed right out of high school or college. I knew these people were going to be different, but they might as well be on a different planet. That's nice in some cases, but astonishing in others.
So please don't believe that things are anywhere near as bad in Paris as it seems. And yes, this is coming from someone inside the media.
These "riots" are happening in a space that is about the size of the typical parking lot at any given American mall. The marches, however, are large, but the riots happen at the conclusions of the marches.
And this is a city that takes up several square miles and has over 10 million people.
The revolution will be televised it seems...and blown so far out of proportion that we will all ignore it after a while.
Take care,
Brett
